SuperDuper! has looked roughly the same since 2004 and that is the appeal. The main window builds one sentence — copy this drive to that drive, erasing the destination first — and you read it before you commit. There is very little else to misunderstand, which matters for the one piece of software you only use properly on your worst day.
The unusual part is that the free download is not a nagware trial. Unregistered, it makes complete erase-and-copy backups indefinitely, and that alone is a working backup strategy if you are willing to start it by hand. The $43.95 licence buys Smart Update, which copies only what changed and turns an hour into a few minutes, plus scheduling and unattended runs. One licence, per user, on all your personal Macs.
The boundary is the major version. Recent purchases got SuperDuper 4 free, SuperDuper 3 buyers from after July 2020 paid up to 30% less, and anyone older paid full price again. It copies to local drives only, and on Apple silicon nobody can promise the copy will boot.
If you plug in a drive once a month and are happy to click Copy Now yourself, download it and pay nothing. The licence is worth it the moment you want backups to happen while you are asleep.
