Bitwig is the DAW for people who think in modulation. Almost any modulator can be aimed at almost any parameter, including parameters inside third-party plugins, and The Grid lets you patch a synth or an effect out of primitives right there in the track instead of in a separate host. Plugins run in sandboxed processes, so a badly behaved VST takes itself down and leaves the session standing.

You buy an edition and you keep it. Twelve months of updates are included; after that your licence keeps running the last version you received, minor updates continue until the next major release, and further feature versions need a paid Upgrade Plan. Letting the plan lapse never switches anything off, which is the whole reason the app belongs on this site.

Two things to check before paying. Bitwig prices in euros only, so a US card pays whatever conversion and tax produce at the till. And the editions are not a straightforward more-content ladder: neither Essentials nor Producer includes The Grid, which is the single feature most people arrive for.

If you mostly record bands and arrange left to right, this is an expensive route to a tape machine. It earns its money when you spend your hours designing sound rather than capturing it.
