EagleFiler

EagleFiler is for the person who wants an archive they can still open in twenty years. It imports documents, web pages and whole Apple Mail mailboxes into a library that is, underneath, just folders and files on disk — so if the app disappeared tomorrow you would still browse everything in Finder. It indexes the full text, records checksums so you can prove nothing has rotted, and otherwise stays out of the way.

Sixty-nine ninety-nine buys one licence, and the licence terms are unusually humane: one person, or one computer, your choice. A single user with a laptop and a desktop is covered. Minor updates are free. Major versions are where money comes back up — free if you bought within six months of the release, discounted otherwise, and those discounts only exist if you bought direct from C-Command rather than through the App Store. Given the release pace, that is a bill every several years, not annually.

It is an archiver, not an editor. No OCR, no PDF markup, no summarising. If you want a research workspace that suggests connections between documents, DEVONthink is the app you actually want and costs more. If you want mail and files put somewhere durable, searchable and boring, this is the cheaper and simpler answer, and the format it leaves behind is the real product.
