safari content blocker with a real $39.99 lifetime unlock

The catch

Lifetime here means the lifetime of the app and the company, not a contract: what you are really paying for is the ongoing curated blocklists, and if development stops the rules go stale even though the app keeps running. Safari-only, because it is built on Apple's content blocker API — Chrome, Firefox and web views inside other apps see nothing from it. The free version is limited to a subset of rules. At $39.99 against $14.99 a year the break-even is under three years, which is the easiest sum on this site.

Rent AdGuard for Safari

$40 once = 14 months of AdGuard for Safari. Over five years that is $175 rented against $39.99 owned — $135 kept, and you still have the app.

AdGuard for Safari priced at $35 a year — annual subscription on the Mac App Store. Checked 2026-09-22.

1Blocker sits in the middle of the Safari blocker spectrum: more control than the set-and-forget apps, far less fiddly than running your own filter lists. You get separate toggles for ads, trackers, cookie notices, social widgets, comment sections and adult content, and if a site breaks you can whitelist it in two taps or write a rule against a specific element yourself.

The reason it is here is the $39.99 Lifetime in-app purchase, which the developer keeps listed next to the $14.99 yearly rather than burying it. Because it is a Universal Purchase with Family Sharing, that one payment covers every Apple device in the house, which is where it beats paying a subscription per year for something that costs the developer very little to keep running.

Understand what the money is for, though: blocklist maintenance. Nobody can sell you a rule set that stays correct forever, so "lifetime" is a bet on 1Blocker LLC still being around and still shipping updates. Given the price, it is about a three-year bet.

Do not buy it if you live in Chrome, or if you mostly want YouTube ads gone — Safari's content blocker API cannot reach either. If Safari is your browser and you just want the web quieter, it is the well-behaved choice.
