Witch

Witch takes the same complaint AltTab does — that Command-Tab switches apps, not windows — and answers it with text instead of pictures. You get separate switchers you can bind independently: one for applications, one for every window, one for browser tabs. Once you know your own window titles, reading a list is faster than recognising a thumbnail, and it reaches the minimised and hidden windows the system switcher pretends do not exist.

The licence is the usual Many Tricks arrangement. $14 buys Witch 4, your licence is valid forever, and the page promises at least a year of updates rather than updates for the life of the app. When Witch 5 arrives it will be a paid upgrade: the 3-to-4 upgrade cost $8, about 57% of full price, which is a reasonable guide to the next one. There has never been a subscription anywhere near this app, and Many Tricks has been shipping since 2010 and answers email, which is the real difference between this and the free option.

Be honest about that free option, though. AltTab does per-window switching with thumbnails for nothing and is the better default for most people. Buy Witch if you specifically want text lists over thumbnails, or tab switching, or a commercial product with a person behind it.
